Which Fighting Series Should I Play?

There are tons of different Fighter games on the market today which can leave gamers a little confused as to which is the best series as each series has different characteristics. To say which fighter game is best, completely depends on who you are as a gamer and your play style. The three main fighting series: StreetFighter, Tekken and Mortal Kombat are all very different from each other and your play style will heavily influence whether you find yourself liking the series. Here we’ll list some of the characteristics of each of the games in order to help you make an informed decision of which of the fighter games would better suit you.

StreetFighter

  • Technical moves

StreetFighter’s moves are extremely technical and can sometimes take some practice to get used to. If you’re a player who just enjoys button mashing then perhaps StreetFighter is not the best series for you. However if you really like to get to know a character and how their attacks are formed, have a try of one of the games in the StreetFighter series.

Tekken

  • Button mashing

The Tekken series features moves that are easy to replicate through button mashing. If you’re the sort of player that likes to just sit there, have fun and not really worry about getting into the mechanics of the game; then the Tekken series is definitely for you. Of course it is always advisable to learn the character moves in Tekken; however players can get by just fine with the use of button mashing.

Mortal Kombat

  • Easy technical moves
  • Storyline

Mortal Kombat is different from other fighting series in that it has a storyline. If you like getting involved and lost in a game’s lore then Mortal Kombat is certainly the game for you. The most recent addition to the series, Mortal Kombat 9 features an extremely in depth story mode which spans about 10 or so hours of game play. If you don’t like the idea of having a lengthy story mode to complete then it is perhaps best to steer clear of Mortal Kombat. Perhaps try something like StreetFighter or Tekken, which feature practically no story mode what-so-ever.

The character’s moves in Mortal Kombat vary from character to character. They are slightly technical in nature so if you want to pull off stronger attacks it is recommended that you learn their moves however Mortal Kombat still gives the slight ability to be able to button mash, however it is nowhere near the extent to which you’re able to successfully button mash in games such as Tekken.

Cross-Over Fighting Games

When playing fighting games that are pitting different series against each other be wary of the play styles as they will tend to favour one game in particular. For example, StreetFighterX Tekken which was released in March 2012 heavily favours the technical game style that is featured classically in all StreetFighter games. Why is this so? Well StreetFighter X Tekken was released by Capcom, the developers of StreetFighter. Don’t worry though Tekken fans; there are talks of Namco releasing Tekken vs. StreetFighter, which will be in Tekken fan’s favour. Even games such as Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 don’t come close to the technical moves that are required in the original StreetFighter games. In fact, due to the hectic gameplay that is featured in Marvel vs. Capcom, players are sort of forced to button mash in order to keep track of what is happening during the round.

Realistic Fighting Games

If the excessive blood and guts fantasy-style fighting game really isn't your thing then there are many other fighting game series that wouls suit you. Games such as UFC or SmackDown vs RAW for example.

At the end of the day saying which of the fighting series is better is completely subjective, it completely depends on what you enjoy as a gamer. However these few pointers should be able to help you make an informed decision as to which series you might enjoy more. So to sum up, if you’re a button masher, stay away from StreetFighter. If you love to get involved in the storyline, give Mortal Kombat a go; and if you just want to sit down, have fun and play the game; try Tekken.
