Indie Game Reviews

With a number of highly anticipated sequels releasing this year its unsurprisingly that many new IPs and smaller or independently developed games have been largely ignored. Without the horrendous budgets for advertising and pants on head retarded fanbases supporting every lazy sequel without question, many interesting titles fall immediately into obscurity. So im doing a few reviews of some of the less mainstream PC titles that deserve some recognition.

First up:
ImageKrater, a Swedish made post apocalyptic RPG has emerged from alpha (and supposedly beta) testing for a full release on Steam last month. Visually, the game is gorgeous, Fatshark has done a fantastic job creating a vibrant and engaging post apocalyptic world that will be a fresh approach for anyone tired of the usual brown and bloom. Gameplay is usually solid and uncomplicated, which may be a turnoff for RPG veterans, but a welcome feature to those looking for a more accessible and casual RPG. Starting off with a mixed class 3 man squad players will upgrade their soldiers with boosters and injectors applied to characters base stats and their two set abilities. As the game progresses, players will find they'll be hiring new soldiers with higher level caps, equipping better boosters and recruiting 'mutant' versions of their preferred classes to deal with more difficult dungeons in the game (Luckily for players, units level extremely quickly). Difficulty can be as high or low as the player wants, with high difficulties resulting in the permanent death of characters should they be knocked out too often without medical attention.

Althought fun, Krater certainly doesnt feel done, its missing content, riddled with bugs and typos, and isn't as customisable as its competitors (just a weapon and 'gadget' slot in terms of equipment), but non of this is much of a concern considering the constant updates to the games content. The promise is that Fatshark intends to continue expanding the game for free, adding PVP, online modes, missions, story progression and constant changes and tweaks to core gameplay at the request of their forum users. It's not there yet, but could shape up to be a strong post apoc RPG in the future.
